FAQs
What is acupuncture? Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to influence physiological functions by stimulating the body’s bio-electromagnetic energy called, ‘qi’. Acupuncture helps restore balance to the body and promotes healing in many ways like reducing inflammation, and improving circulation,
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes, acupuncture is safe when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner. The FDA approved needles used are very thin, sterile, and disposable, reducing the risk of infection. Additionally, acupuncture is a non-invasive treatment with minimal side effects. They can be placed almost anywhere on the body from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet, with a few exceptions of places not needled. What conditions can acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture is known to effectively treat a variety of conditions, including but not limited to: chronic and acute pain (such as back pain, neck pain, and arthritis), headaches and migraines, stress and anxiety, PTSD, digestive disorders, allergies, insomnia, and fertility issues. It can also be used to support overall wellness and preventive care. Acupuncture should be the first line of treatment in most cases of general health concern. What should I expect during an acupuncture session?
During an acupuncture session, you will first have a consultation with your practitioner to discuss your health concerns and goals. Then, you will be asked to lie down on a comfortable treatment table. The practitioner will insert thin needles into specific acupuncture points on your body, which may cause a mild sensation of pressure or tingling. You will then rest quietly from 20-45 minutes. E-Stim and heat lamp could be used dependent on individual needs. Many people find acupuncture sessions to be deeply relaxing and rejuvenating. Is it painful?
Acupuncture needles are filiform needles. They’re very fine and flexible, about the size of a hair follicle and solid. They differ from lumen (injection) needles, which are hollow and have a larger diameter causing for more of a painful experience. In most cases, there is little discomfort; a slight pinch which goes away almost immediately. Most patients find the treatments very relaxing and many fall asleep during the treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
Every person is different, therefore there is no singular answer. Acupuncture is individualized and not a one sized shoe treatment model. Many practitioners will say 5-10 treatments for an acute condition, and 10-20 for a chronic one. It really all depends on the severity, nature, and history of the condition presented. Most people usually have several things happening at once. We offer single and five session blocks which allow for someone to not be stuck with multiple paid sessions they might no longer want. The great thing is if you have a five session block, and feel better in three, then the remaining two can be used at later dates for check ups and preventative care. The nature of our lifestyles keeps causing the same conditions to reappear. No one never not needs acupuncture. :)
